How to Sew a Felt Pumpkin: Easy Tutorial with Pattern

My little guy is quickly getting bigger, so holidays are becoming more and more exciting around here! I decided recently that I want to be that overly festive mom that decorates for every season. It seemed unnecessary before having my little one, and even last year when he was so small he wouldn’t notice decorations. Now I feel like it’s such an honor and a blessing to help sprinkle in the magic and wonder of each season into our home. The first season I’m tackling is our fall decor!

Nothing says fall harvest like a pumpkin, am I right? Pumpkins are universal and perfect for decorating for fall, Halloween, and all the way to Thanksgiving dinner! In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to sew these cute pumpkins. You can download the free pattern HERE . This pattern has three different sizes: a small pumpkin, medium pumpkin, and a large pumpkin. You can make all three or just one-

the choice is yours!

MATERIALS:

For this felt pumpkin craft, you are going to need only a few supplies.

◦ Orange Felt fabric or cotton fabric (large fabric scraps will work for this as well)

◦ Brown felt or fabric scraps

◦ A sewing machine OR hand sewing needles

◦ Green Embroidery floss

◦ Orange embroidery floss

◦ Orange thread that matches your fabrics

◦ Stuffing or plastic bags for filling up your pumpkins.

◦ Straight pins

◦ Sharp fabric scissors

Cut Out Pattern Pieces

Print out the pattern above and carefully pin it to your fabric with straight pins. If you are making fabric pumpkins instead of felt pumpkins, be careful not to cut your fabric pumpkin pieces from the wrong sides of the fabric. If the fabric is patterned, the fabric pattern should face up and the paper pattern will be pinned on top. Set your felt shapes aside, keeping them neatly sorted in pumpkin body pieces and stem pattern pieces. IMPORTANT NOTE: I would recommend only making one pumpkin at a time so you don’t accidentally mix up different sized pumpkin pieces.

Assembling Your Pumpkin

Take two of your pumpkin body pieces and place the right sides of the fabric together. Right sides are the sides of the fabric you want showing on the finished project. Sew them together on one side only using either your sewing machine or your hand sewing needles and orange thread. Repeat this step until all pumpkin body pieces are attached to each other.

There will be a small opening on the top and bottom of the pumpkin body. These openings are the pumpkin bottom and where we will attach the pumpkin stem. Take your stem pattern pieces and place the right sides together. Sew together on three sides. Turn your stem inside out and fill with a little bit of your stuffing. Sew the last side closed.

Turn your pumpkin body right side out and close the top body opening by sewing in your pumpkin stem. If you want to use a wooden stem or pipe cleaner for the stem instead, you are welcome to substitute that here. If you choose this, you may need a saving dab of glue to secure the wooden stem in place.

Take your stuffing or plastic bags and stuff your pumpkin. Sew the pumpkin bottom closed with your orange thread.Sew the pumpkin bottom closed with your orange thread. Now for the fun part- let your creativity run free and decorate this pumpkin however you’d like. Add black face pieces and make it a jack-o’-lantern. Use your embroidery floss and add some hand embroidered embellishments or personalizations.

There you have it! A fully assembled, sweet pumpkin perfect for ringing in the fall. Repeat as many times as you’d like in any size you choose. These little sewing projects may not seem grand, but they really add up to help make the feelings of a well loved home.
