How to Make A DIY Christmas Dollhouse for Maileg Mice

Hello, friends! Welcome back to The Midnight Mustard Seed. There is something about cute little mice at Christmas time that is so charming and cozy. We got my little one some holiday Maileg mice to play with each Christmas, and they are simply adorable. Several years back, my husband gifted me with a wooden dollhouse building kit. It has collected dust in the garage for quite some time, but I thought it was only fitting to make a little Christmas magic by turning the dollhouse into a sweet Christmas mouse house!

A sweet felt mouse chef with a round beige face, black bead eyes, and a large red pom-pom hat stands at a tiny white vintage-style stove. Dressed in a festive blue-and-red patterned sweater, gray-blue overalls, and striped red-and-white socks, the mouse leans forward to stir a copper pot on the stovetop, with more miniature copper cookware and a little casserole dish inside the open oven.
The kitchen features delicate wooden cabinets with open shelving displaying tiny teacups, bowls, and utensils, all set against a soft, cream-colored wallpaper scattered with delicate green holly leaves and bright red berries. Warm holiday magic fills this small, lovingly detailed space.

These Maileg mice—those darling little friends from Bella Luna Toys—are heirloom-quality toys that deserve their own perfect home. Whether you have the classic big ones or the tiniest baby mice, building a Maileg mouse house (or Maileg dollhouse) can become a toy that is cherished for years to come. Maileg mice aren’t cheap- but you can sew your own mice as well! Honestly, making your own adds to the handmade charm and sentimental value to your loved ones. I will share how to make those on the blog soon!

The small room is warmly lit and wrapped in dark, rich wallpaper dotted with delicate red berries and evergreen sprigs, creating a festive yet intimate cabin-like atmosphere. Two white-framed windows let in soft light, framing the scene beautifully.
Two adorable felt Maileg mice are tucked into their beds for the night:
• On the left, a mouse wearing a red pom-pom hat and a red-and-white plaid scarf snuggles under a lush green blanket in a wooden bed frame.
• On the right, another mouse in a matching red pom-pom hat and cozy plaid shirt rests peacefully under a green blanket in an identical wooden bed.
Between the beds stands a tiny, snow-dusted Christmas tree topped with a sweet wooden star, its branches glistening with frost. A small red lantern with a glowing warm light sits at the base of the tree, adding a magical holiday glow to the room. A bright red wrapped gift rests on the wooden floor nearby, ready for Christmas morning.

For our mouse house, I tried to stay as cost-effective and creative as possible. I used mostly things I had around the house, recycled materials, scraps, and finds from places like Hobby Lobby. It isn’t perfect but it doesn’t take much to create a charming, festive play space. Our mouse house has easily become my favorite part of our holiday setup.

How I Built This Magical Mouse Dollhouse (Step-by-Step Inspiration)

To create your own dollhouse, you can use a cardboard house or wooden doll house for Maileg mice. You could even think outside the box with any sturdy base, like a large cardboard box or an old shelf unit (IKEA hacks are popular for this!). Cut and glue panels for walls and floors, then divide into different rooms: kitchen, bath, living area, and maybe a bonus room upstairs.

•  Floors & Walls: Use wood scraps or thin popsicle sticks for flooring (I love the natural look of wooden planks). For wallpaper, get creative with fabric scraps—cut them to size and adhere with glue or mod podge for a textured, cozy feel that’s perfect for vintage dollhouses. Paint or paper walls- use floral scrapbook paper for a vintage feel, or simple paint. In our bathroom, I created a shiplap effect by gluing popsicle sticks horizontally onto the walls- it’s such an easy way to add character with everyday materials!

The small room features warm wooden plank walls and flooring, giving it a rustic cabin feel. A tiny white clawfoot bathtub sits in the corner, where an adorable felt Maileg mouse (wearing a red pom-pom hat, plaid sweater, gray pants, and striped red-and-white socks) relaxes luxuriously, leaning back with paws up and head resting on the tub edge, gazing out the white-framed window.
Next to the tub is a sweet pedestal sink with delicate gold faucets, while a classic white toilet with a red seat stands nearby. A small, snow-dusted miniature Christmas tree adds festive charm in the opposite corner, with tiny black steps leading up to the tub area.

•  Furniture & Details: Thrift or make dollhouse furniture from everyday materials. I sourced some pieces from Hobby Lobby’s miniature section—like tiny stoves and hutches—but for a more personal touch, craft your own from scrap wood: sand down bits of balsa or leftover lumber to shape simple tables, chairs, or shelves. A painted medicine cup becomes a sink, cotton balls can stuff tiny pillows, and twig pieces make rustic shelves or firewood in the fireplace. Repurpose small toys as accessories.

•  Festive Touches: For Christmas magic, tuck in mini evergreen trees, sleds, lights, and wrapped packages.

•  Finishing: It’s not about perfection; it’s about pouring in a lot of love.

This project was such fun and I know it will be well loved for Christmases to come. If you’re dreaming up your own Maileg dollhouse, grab those scrap materials, invite the kids (or just your own inner child), and let the magic unfold. Handmade creations like this become heirlooms, filled with memories and wonder.

May your holidays be filled with cozy crafting and lots of joy.

With love and a sprinkle of Christmas cheer,

Samm 🌿🐭✨
